The Mato Grosso State University – UNEMAT, in partnership with the Municipality of Nova, launched the project on the circular economy and reduction of the amount of waste sent to the Água Boa Landfill. Selective Collection is a process of social, productive, and economic inclusion for the collectors and a vehicle for environmental conservation and sanitation for the city. It is participatory because all citizens can collaborate with the separation of materials following the theory of the three r’s, that is:

Reduce: changing consumption habits, thus reducing the proliferation of waste.

Reuse: reuse of materials, such as supermarket bags, glass and plastic jars, among others.

Recycle: artisanal or industrial processes transform used materials into new products.

By the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS), established by Law No. 12,305/2010, municipal authorities are responsible for the management of solid waste, the premise of which is integrated management that aims to reduce waste production, maximize reuse, recycle materials and dispose of waste in an environmentally appropriate manner, aiming to universalize services in the municipality. One of the primary efforts is to use as much waste as possible in recycled form and minimize the amount of waste sent to landfills. One of the objectives of CODEMA (2015) is “to encourage the institutional strengthening of municipal environmental management, as well as inter-municipal economic development consortia.” These municipalities, located in the central-eastern region of the state of Mato Grosso, currently have an estimated population of 120 thousand inhabitants, and one of CODEMA’s initiatives was to license and install a sanitary landfill in the municipality of Água Boa, which receives urban solid waste from some CODEMA municipalities. The main objective of this project is to stimulate discussions with the local community and propose a selective collection system for urban solid waste for the city of Nova Xavantina.
