Sultan Idris Education University (Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris: UPSI) is a public university in the town of Tanjung Malim, Perak State in Malaysia. The University was established in 1922 as Sultan Idris Training College before evolving into its current university status in 1997.
UPSI has partnered and signed MOU in several collaborative community engagement programs with the Seberang Perai City Council in the State of Penang. UPSI joined EPIC-N in 2021.
By adopting the EPIC Model, the university, through its Green Education Centre, intended to assist the City Council with its goal to empower local farmers to increase their incomes by adopting smart sustainable farming/polyculture and composting techniques. The Green Education Centre strives to transfer the learning in the classroom to the farm. Students will have the chance to integrate their programming skills with farming techniques, including aquaponics, fertigation, and compost. Students will learn to manage farms through digital technologies, such as the real-time monitoring system, the wireless automated irrigation system, and the Smart Economical Food Waste Composter.
Both the City Council and the University are keen on keeping this program alive and expanding it to include other farming activities in the near future to satisfy the Penang Green 2030 Agenda, and improve USPI’s UI Green Metric World University Ranking
