The University of California, Irvine (UCI) Campuswide Honors Collegium is seeking project partners for the capstone course Cities: Focal Point for Sustainability Problems and Solutions. Students will work in small multidisciplinary teams to apply theories learned in class by developing solutions to an environmental, health, or social problem in a local context. For the current cohort, project topics and partners are needed for January to May 2023. Students will explore a local sustainability issue and prepare a product that lays out the issue and the pros/cons of alternative ways to deal with it in an urban context. Government, non-profit organizations, and corporations are welcome to participate at no cost, and may apply at https://forms.gle/ivf2iRQiNzR3iChX9. Partners will have the opportunity to gain fresh perspectives from UCI Honors students on their proposed topic, and will receive an informational report and presentation. The range of topics is extremely broad and not limited to a specific area of sustainability. To view some of the topics and results of research from the 2021 cohort click here: https://honors.uci.edu/chc-sustainable-societies-showcasing-research/

Cities is the capstone for Sustainable Societies, a six-quarter, two academic year, course series available to honors students drawn from all majors, beginning in their second year at UCI. This course will be taught by three primary faculty instructors from different disciplines: Materials Science and Engineering, Public Health, and Urban Planning & Public Policy as well as guest lectures from faculty in other disciplines. For more information on the course curriculum click here.

Project partners will meet with students about once per month to accomplish the following:
Provide insight about the project topic
Provide access to the necessary data to evaluate and address the issue
Attend final presentation days in June where all student teams will present their topics and findings

The dates and times for group meetings and presentation days will be provided once the course syllabus has been finalized. The Campuswide Honors Collegium is excited to partner with the local community in creating sustainable societies.
