Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS) Universiti Sains Malaysia has collaborated with Penang Green Council (PGC) to organise Segregate and Recycle Your Waste! program. This program was carried out at Kampung Perlis, Balik Pulau, Penang on 15th January 2022. The program was run by students from university courses. The main purposes of this program are to educate the community regarding effective waste management, specifically in waste segregation, to encourage them to practice waste segregation in their daily lifestyle, and also to educate the community about the impact of mismanagement of waste in long term. Moreover, to promote a cleaner and healthier community. From the early observation, the community of Kampung Perlis did not practice waste segregation in their daily lifestyle. The main issue is Kampung Perlis does not have any recycling bin around the area. Facility is a crucial element of educating people to practice waste segregation. This is because the availability of recycling bin will encourage people to practice waste segregation in their daily life. Thus, to support them in practicing waste segregation, one set of recycling bin was given to them during the program. The bin will helps them to practice waste segregation and encourage them to recycle their waste. This program helps the community to understand more about waste management and how to manage their waste in the right way. The community also managed to develop its own committee that is specifically in charge of waste recycling. The recyclable waste will be sold to the contractor nearby. The students have gained a lot of experience such as communicating and learning together with the community. Besides that, get to know the mindset and eagerness of the community to learn new things and their shared intention on saving nature from polluting by taking actions individually to overcome the issue.
