La Mesa, “The Jewel of the Hills” the “American Hometown” has a wide variety of community destinations for its residents along with beautiful walkable neighborhoods. The challenge is to bring La Mesa’s Urban Trails mobility action plan into a visual reality that not only informs the user of basic navigation, but also connects the resident to high-priority neighborhoods and key community destinations. The main focus of the Urban Trails is to encourage walking, biking and the use of the transit systems in alignment with the larger regional mobility action plan and transportation goals. The target audience includes city residents from ages 8 to 80 year olds, the “8-80” network aims to create a sense of connectivity and improved health. Making a safe and fun experience for the children walking to and from school and senior residents enjoying a leisure walk through the Village or to the Adult Enrichment Center is an example of a system priority. Different approaches were taken to convey this challenge and inspiration was drawn from La Mesa’s history, landmarks, structure design and infrastructure. Neutral earth tones to bright vibrant colors were used with graphic form along with hierarchy with text and icons. The students of the SDSU Environmental Graphic Design course are grateful for this collaboration opportunity and submit the enclosed proposals for your review and consideration.
