Universiti Sains Malaysia Established the Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS) to Mainstream Sustainability

By: Ada Inman

Universiti Sains Malaysia has embraced the vision of becoming a sustainability-led university of world-class standing. The university established the Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS) to mainstream sustainability. This center is designed to work with all other relevant sections within CGSS, as well as regional and international organizations, national and regional governments, private sector, civil society organizations, and NGOs to promote sustainable development.

By adopting the EPIC Model, CGSS and the university collaborate with Penang Green Council (PGC) on zero-waste management and promote the zero-waste lifestyle. The adoption of the zero-waste lifestyle would address the climate change concerns and assist in mitigating Penang’s waste challenges. PGC would provide the expertise and guidance through sharing experiences and materials, while USM will provide the expertise on training sessions and direct engagement with the community. Students from two courses, Public Sector Economics and Tourism Economics, would be engaged in this initial EPIC project.
