Universidad de Colima Hosts EPIC-N for Program Event

The University of Colima, through the General Directorate of Liaison and the Faculty of Biological and Agricultural Sciences, carries out the project called “Honey from Colima, palynological characterization and production alternatives,” which aims at developing a characterization of the pollen and spores that are found in some representative honey of the state, which includes generating a pollen library. In addition, a spatial location analysis will be integrated into the Geographic Information System that will allow beekeepers to identify suitable and safe places for the location of their hives.
EPIC-N funds this project. For the execution of this project, U Colima has the valuable collaboration of the State Government through the Undersecretary of Rural Development of the State of Colima and the Beekeeping System Committee of Colima, as well as students and teachers from the Faculty of Biological and Agricultural Sciences and the Faculty of Chemical Sciences.
A milestone product is now the Colima pollen reference library of around 160 species, which will be deposited in the UCOL herbarium and will soon be digitized for publication.
This information is helpful to effectively model the optimal places for the location of hives, considering not only the elements of biological characteristics of the species but the preferences of the beekeepers (which implicitly includes their experience).
During the visit of Andrea Chávez Michaelsen, EPIC Network Regional Coordinator for Latin America, representing Dr. Joel Rogers, chair of the EPIC Board of Directors, U Colima presented project progress and future project proposals to be incorporated into the EPIC-Network.
