By: Ada Inman

Escuela Superior Politecnica del Litoral’s (ESPOL) EPIC Model Program is based on the need to promote joint work between authorities, communities, and universities to construct resilient communities through strengthening capacities that empowers social actors on their problems and provides skills to address the solutions. The program consolidates the academic and research work of the School of Maritime Engineering and Marine Sciences, which pays attention to the actions that generate social and environmental impact. Gina Andrade, professor at the School of Maritime Engineering and Marine Sciences, is in charge of the program.

Integrated Coastal Management is a balanced and equitable development approach that addresses economic, social, cultural, and environmental issues that allow for harmonious development. The program looks to implement a balanced approach to nature and adaptation to climate change to build resilient and sustainable societies.

The mission of this program is to strengthen community capacities to support the sustainable development of the District of Santa Elena through coastal management.
